What most people don’t know: 76% of Australia’s 23,000 boarding students are from rural and remote areas, who simply don’t have access to a local high school. For these families, it’s not about privilege; it’s about educational survival.
The boarding sector has evolved dramatically. Once cold, understaffed institutions, today’s schools now have psychologists on-site, better staff ratios, and proper safeguarding measures (though work remains, especially around peer-to-peer abuse).
But there are trade-offs. Students gain independence and lifelong friendships, but can become more peer-oriented than parent-oriented. And while modern schools won’t accept children under 10-12 years old, early separation can have lasting psychological effects.
